Viscosupplementation
Viscosupplementation is a treatment in which a hyaluronan preparation is injected directly into the joint. Hyaluronan is a naturally occurring substance found in healthy joint fluid that helps with lubrication and shock absorption, allowing smoother movement of the joint surfaces.
This treatment is often used for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle who have not found relief with other non-surgical options such as pain medication, physical therapy, or corticosteroid injections. By supplementing the joint fluid, viscosupplementation can improve lubrication, reduce pain, and delay the need for surgical intervention.
Treatment may involve a single injection or a series of injections spaced out over several weeks, depending on the product used and the individual patient’s needs. Relief may be gradual, with benefits lasting for several months in many cases.
Some patients may experience temporary side effects such as mild pain, swelling, warmth, stiffness, or redness at the injection site, typically resolving within 48 hours. Headache or joint soreness may also occur. Applying ice and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever may help. Patients should avoid strenuous activity such as running or tennis for 48 hours to a week after the injection unless otherwise directed by their physician.
Our office offers several viscosupplementation options, including Orthovisc, Genvisc, Supartz, Gelsyn, and Euflexxa. Your provider will determine the most appropriate treatment for your condition.
Important: Contact your physician immediately if you develop a fever or if pain and swelling do not improve within 48 hours after the injection.
